May 18 and 19: “historical fencing” activity in the main courtyard

29 April 2024

Take advantage of the weekend of May 18 and 19 to come and discover our 100% historical entertainment in the main courtyard of the castle.

During the Pentecost weekend, the castle has reserved an event for you where fencers practice, parade, show off their weapons and introduce you to the art of wielding a sword as in the 17th century and throughout time.

An unmissable event, 100% included in your entry ticket.

On the program: entertainment, fencing shows and introduction to sword fighting. All this happens in the main courtyard of the castle or if it rains in the large lower room of the keep.

Come and try your hand at the sword at the Château de Sully-sur-Loire

"We are an association of enthusiasts offering historical shows and activities. We offer activities centered on the Modern Era, covering the three so-called “classical” centuries (16th, 17th and 18th centuries), from the Renaissance to the start of the Revolution French.

swashbuckler, masculine noun (for a woman we say: swashbuckler) Person who likes to fight with a sword.

One of the company's favorite periods: the 17th century

Thanks to the literary talent of a well-known author, the Company of the King's Musketeers and that of the Cardinal's Guards left an indelible mark on French folklore (while other companies were just as honorable).

Dumas was freely inspired by the apocryphal memoirs of Captain d'Artagnan (yes, he existed) to create their legend. These two companies, despite a rivalry that cannot be denied, were not at loggerheads either. They even merged under the regency of Cardinal Mazarin.

Likewise, the Musketeers were not the King's secret agents, nor even his bodyguards. They were soldiers experienced in the art of siege warfare, brilliantly illustrated during the siege of La Rochelle in 1633.

1622: Foundation of the company of Musketeers of the Maison du Roy, formerly light horse, which was armed with muskets.

1626: Foundation of the company of the Cardinal's Guards, at the request of Louis XII, for the personal protection of Cardinal Richelieu

1634-1646: Jean Armand du Peyrier, better known as the Count of Tréville, becomes its captain. The company was dissolved in 1646 by Mazarin, who feared the growing influence of Tréville.

1657: Cardinal Mazarin refounds the Company of Musketeers.

1661: The company of the Cardinal's Guards merges with that of the King. The first company will be called the Gray Musketeers, and the second the Black Musketeers, this due to the color of the coat of their mounts.

1667-1673: Charles de Batz de Castelmore d’Artagnan becomes captain of the Gray Musketeers. He died in 1673 during the siege of Maastricht
